Plot
Dogtown was a model of how a city should be run. Everyone knew their duty, but when Mme Poodle notices a funny smell in town, the guard dogs are sent to find out what the cause might be and discover that a forest fire is perilously close. ((Don’t) Play with Fire) Dogtown is well prepared for the forest fire that threatens to surround it and all the Dogs are soon ready for action (Dogs R Us) Meanwhile, outside the safety of the Dogtown walls, some forest creatures are becoming frightened. The wise owl advises everyone to stay calm (Don’t Panic) The little brown butterfly, who is quiet and meek, offers to fly above the fire to find out if there is a way for the animals to escape the devastation. (The Butterfly’s Song) When the butterfly returns, it reports that the whole of the forest is under threat of destruction and the only safe haven is Dogtown. The animals decide to ask for help from the Dogs even though they are their enemies and seem to be very menacing. Meanwhile, the citizens of Dogtown barricade themselves in, safe and sound (Dogs R Us (reprise)) The dogs prepare themselves for an imminent attack after reports of trouble at the main gate filter through. The chief dog is called upon to sort the situation out. (He’s the Guv’nor) and decides which of the animals will be allowed to enter Dogtown. The forest creatures enter Dogtown but are soon locked up. (Out of the frying pan, into the fire) There is a massive commotion after more animals try to storm the gates to escape the fire, and the Guv’nor, realising that the only way to sort out the crisis, is to make sure everyone works together to make the forest look absolutely lovely once again (Open my Eyes)
